Kantara

Shiva, a tribal vagabond lives with his mother in hamlet, stays away from the traditional Daivaradhane and Bhoota Kola legacy due to an unforgettable childhood incident. He is happy loafing around with his friends and doing petty jobs for his landlord. When Forest officer Murali enters the scene, it gives a fresh dimension to the man-vs-nature fight. Can Shiva save the forest from Murali? Or is Murali just a dummy bait cast by bigger fish?

    Kantara
    7.9/10

Although the movie is good, I would like to state that this is a theatre film. As in, the make most out of this movie you have to see it in the theatre.

The best part of the movie is its audio including its bgm which elevate each scene into a whole different level.

The acting of Rishab Shetty who is also the director is commendable, his acting skills is really shown during the last act of the movie.

The movie is somewhat overhyped/overrated I would say, cause people act like this is the best movie they seen and its pure cinema. Although they usual masala elements aren't there, this movie could have been wayyy better.

If you think about it there are a couple of problems with the movie. One stupidity which is seen in almost every south Indian movie is its love aspect. Picture this, a guy somewhat assaults a girl and then offers a girl, and that's it the girl falls for the guy. That's literally what happens in the movie.

The shift of the plot, at the start of the movie its like a fantasy mystery movie with the demigod and all, but then suddenly it changes to the land ownership and the forest and suddenly to the fact of the landlord being evil.

The middle of the movie or the 2nd act of the movie could be slightly boring if not for the bgm. The second part also feels like from a complete different movie due to its sudden shift as there is no effect of the demigod or the culture of the people living there.

The entire movie the police officers speak with dread about the fact of the cultures of the people and its demigod. But to put into effect, they barely show anything.

I wish they spent a little more time in showing the character change of the landlord and the sudden change of relation between Shiva (Rishab) and the police officer.

The middle of the movie or the 2nd act of the movie could be slightly boring if not for the bgm. The second part also feels like from a complete different movie due to its sudden shift as there is no effect of the demigod or the culture of the people living there.

One thing I found confusing is, the demigod didn't chose an actual devotee of the demigod but rather a drunkard, trouble maker who is good for nothing. Plot Armor.

The director could have shown more of the demigod cause that's genuinely one of the best parts of the movie.

The quality of the action changes so frequently between the movie, cause sometimes its really good and sometimes it just a dark dusty area with like 10 cuts per minute.

The demigod part of the movie made it way more interesting and I hope in the next movie coming its shown more properly. Im not even kidding, if they had removed the demigod aspect, this movie would have been like every other meh movie.

    I would recommend.

Good screenplay but instable storyline.. overrated!
The movie is very overrated.. yes screenplay was good. But the storyline is overrated and instable.. the forest officer character gets changed instantly in a over of time.. i don't know y God runs away into the forest.. he could've shown his power to the landlord in the spot itself.. i don't know y God always will run away and take a life of a servant who got a family in concern.. this movie encourages illegal affairs though it's a spiritual centric film.. when God showed his power by spilling the blood of landlord.. what God was doing when his devotee got killed by landlord.. ? Story isn't stable atlast..

    Masterpiece
This is a masterpiece. The acting, direction, screenplay, and art are all top-notch and brilliant. The folk story is expertly narrated, showcasing the rich culture that is evident throughout the story. The background is superb, and Rishabh Shetty's acting deserves a national award. His performance is on another level. All the actors have delivered excellent performances, and the camera work and editing are also brilliant. Rishab Shetty is a wonderful talent. The climax sequence is next level and unlike anything seen in other movies. This film remains true to the roots of Indian culture, particularly the culture and traditions of coastal Karnataka. It's a must-watch film, and I highly recommend it.

One time watch - missed opportunity! Could have been better
Don't believe the hype! Firs 20 minutes and last 10 minutes is what people are raving about. Thes rest of the movie is a typical movie.

They should learn from movie like tummbad where the storyline keep people engaged throughout and deliver with solid ending.

This one is just not worth the hype!

The leads acting is good but gets diminished through sloppy screenplay and unnecessary elements.

The director didn't know what kind of movie he wanted to make, songs are useless and don't add to the story. Characters are loosely written and the main diety is not fleshed out as it should have been to keep audience engaged.

Just a typical revenge story with supernatural elements added to it.

    False rating part 3
Same stereotypical film from Tamil industry. The hero is something unique despite being indecent boozy type guy. And he wins ultimately. The first 15 minutes is interesting and praiseworthy. Then its the same hero-villain issue and the hero wins. Nothing gripping and interesting. Technically it's good, VFX and effects. But the content needs some innovation and maturity.

Tamil industry should be serious regarding film making. Only money motivation in films is making this industry flop. This is for tamil people only and heavily lacks global appeal. Though the technicals are good in some way it would be a 4/10 but to balance the rating it would be 1 out of 10.

    Objectification of women
The parts where the daiva is on screen is enthralling and enjoyable to the point where we began rearching about the daiva. Very positive, the film makers could not do justice to this story and tradition.

The hero is violent, abusive and objectifies women to the extent that we were cringing all the way. There was nothing hero like in the personality portrayed by the lead actor. Is this really how we want to teach our kids how women are to be treated? Those scenes were not funny at all and were reminders of how far we as a country still need to come to reduce stalking, eve teasing culture and make 50% of India feel safe.

Most of it was the same old boring story. Hope someone else makes a better film on the daiva. Lost opportunity to show a good topic.

    Overrated
Highly overrated.. the hero/protagonist has only one response for everything, start fighting.. seems very uncivilized and arrogant Following things are glamorized in the movie Drinking, smoking, killing animals, cutting trees, hitting women, not respecting govt officials and orders..

Movie shows that faith can be exploited by those in power for their own benefit, but in the end it kind of reinforces blind faith.

Youth enjoying such movies is a serious problem as it normalizes many negative traits, especially the treatment of women.

I did not connect with any character or the story line and wasted 2.5 hours. Hope I can save someone that time.

Perfect blend of light and dark
Kantara is ties culture, traditions and beleifs that have been upheld since ages, with the modern time setup. You can't stop enjoying the lighter moments so subtly put in between serious situations. Attention to detail, character building, plot setup and then the climax simply blows your mind!! The way story is narrated, it grips you from start till the end, and very appropriately added background score, that uses folk music and sounds from local region, simply enhances every scene. Every character both good and bad have been played so well, that you really start believing in the story which is a completely fictional.

    Mind Blowing
Must watch. Literal goosebumps in the beginning & end. The ending deserves a special mention in the whole movie.

Rarely I see a movie twice. This is one of those.

Blessed to have movies like this.
The epic art of direction in showing the true faith in divine power is just magnificent. The feelings aroused during watching the movie were like, where can I surrender myself to get such movies again and again. Thank you, Rishab Shetty sir, for setting a benchmark for us. This masterpiece was just shot in about 3 months, in such short span and within a budget of 16 Cr, Kantara team has showed the mirror to all who used to just flow money like water and still lacked the fundamental connectivity with the audience. The beauty of Varaha avatar, how can someone not like of their Gods shown in such beautiful scenery, Thank you again.
