Sondheim's last gift to the world!
From the music to the dancing and even the beautiful costumes and sets, "West Side Story (2021)" is one of the best musical adaptations ever made. Ansel Elgort's outstanding performance as "Tony" and Rachel Zegler's perfect portrayal of "Maria", I'd like to think that Sondheim would be proud of everyone involved with the film, but especially Spielberg. But someone very in particular that shined like no other in this movie was "Anita" and "Anita", Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose. Moreno who'd played "Anita" in "West Side Story" in 1961, had me sobbing as she sang "Somewhere". Yet DeBose had a presence like no other. Her graceful yet fearless dancing and singing in "America" to her gut-wrenching portrayal of "A Boy Like That/I Have a Love", she truly did deserve her Academy Award.

It's Pretty Good... Just Not The Best
Look, don't get me wrong, I thought it was pretty good... until after the song "Gee Officer Krupkee". I'm gonna be honest, the show was split into three parts. 1/3 was entertaining, 1/3 was absolutely BORING, and 1/3 was completely Spanish. I get how that was a pretty big part of the show, but I DON'T SPEAK SPANISH. I thought any scene with the Jets in it (especially Mike Faist) was really entertaining, but the rest was just... dull. For instance, I don't have the thought of skipping over the songs like "The Jet Song", "Gee Officer Krupkee", "Cool", and all those. But song like "Only You", "Maria", and others put me too sleep. I will admit, "America" was one of the best songs in the show. But other then that, the show is an "eh" kinda show. Sry.

    Why revisit the past?
There are individual moments of brilliance in this movie: the high energy dancing, Ariana DuBose's fiery performance as Anita, Rita Moreno's poignant rendition of Somewhere, excellent cinematography by Spielberg, and hearing the iconic music of Leonard Bernstein and the clever lyrics by Steven Sondheim again.

But watching this movie is like reading your favorite book for the third time. You know the plot and enjoy revisiting your favorite characters. You can catch minor details that you missed the first time. And you get to see the interactions between minor characters in a new light.

But you are not surprised or shocked by the ending. The only pleasure is discovering nuances in the dialogue and the echos of Shakespeare's classic play.

I am glad that I saw this movie, but once is enough for me.

A Glossy Retelling of the Original
I'm far from a West Side Story guru but this appeared to be faithful to the original film. Under the watchful eye of Spielberg it was visually slick and impressive. High marks for the lighting and production team. The acting is first rate and the musical numbers were well-choreographed. It certainly drove the point home around interactions and emotional feelings, positive and negative, between people from different backgrounds and cultures. Did this movie need a refresh, probably not but I suppose it may enlighten a new generation to a classic. I wonder if that's why Spielberg chose this as he usually doesn't original stories.

    Sooooo boring.
Inept performances by all (Especially Anita playing it like Speedy Gonzalez with that cartoon accent), boring choreography, boring singing, boring direction, weird CGI, Rita Moreno's character does not belong in this movie, Ansel looks like he just walked out of a 1990s GAP commercial, not jail. Haha. Also, no real Puerto Ricans for all the required leads. And Spielberg is such a drudge he made "America" and "One Hand, One Heart" literal like a kindergartener. Haha. Far worse adaptation than the first one. Pointless and dated. Also, this movie is offensive to Puerto Ricans but y'all not ready for that convo.

    A bad mistake:
Frankly, I think that Spielberg made a very bad mistake when he decided to do a remake of the old, original 1961 film version of West Side Story. This one will never, ever even begin to top the 1961 film version. The 2021 film version of West Side Story has none of the charm, charisma, and beauty that the old, original 1961 film version of West Side Story has.
